After the Augument war finished, with the Augmnets losing after a nuclear exchange, there were still many who had been modified, and assisted in the rebuilding of United Earth. Humanity is one of the core races of the United Federation of Planets, with several main worlds, and many colony worlds. It can justifiably claim that the United Earth Starfleet was the template for the eventual Federation Starfleet, and it was the actions and leadership of the NX-01 Enterprise, led by Captain Hernandez and then later Captain Sato, in the wake of the revelations of Vulcan High Command, and reform of The Polity of Vulcan from a militaristic command structure to the more democratic form visible in the 23rd century, as well as bringing together the Alpha Quadrent powers, that formed the United Federation of Planets to begin with.

As has been said by a well known Andorian philosopher. "Humans build communities."

However, scars of the Augment Wars, and World War Three, where 35% of the entirety of the human race was destroyed linger. To this day, United Earth, and the Stellar Friends of Earth, remain hostile to genetically modified humans in various ways. Within the Federation, there are increasing calls for humanity to effectively stop dictating so much Federation policy.[1]

As of the 2350 census, the Federation Census Department estimates there are approximately 10.9 billion humans within the Federation.

Important Planets

Earth

The home world of humanity, administered by United Earth Government, often referred to as "United Earth". The headquarters of the federal bureaucracy are located in Dakar, Sinegal, African Provinces.[sidenotes 1].

Speaks for approximately 65.5% of humanity, and 74% through the Stellar Friends of Earth[2]

Current population is 6.85 billion on Earth, with approximately 450 million being non human. With Luna, the population is 7.15 billion, with approximately 550 million being non human. [3]

Mars

Homeworld of the Utopia Planetia Worlds, a formerly joint venture between United Earth, Starfleet, and the Polity of Vulcan before transferred to the Federation of Mars, a member of United Earth. Population is approximately 189 million, focused on the domed cities and settled region of Mare Deuteronicus to Terra Arabia crescent.[sidenotes 2][4].

As of 2352, the Mars Independent Movement has been moving to make the Federation of Mars the Republic of Mars, and independent from Mars, but a member of the Federation.

Terra Nova

The first colony world of Earth, founded by first-gen warp drive ships in 2078, it is now a prosperous planet focusing on art and science. Located within 20 light years of Earth, this colony world was located in the Eta Cassiopeiae system. Tensions rose between them and Earth, and they went silent in the late 21st century, due to a large asteroid impact on the planet.

It was only the actions of the NX-01 Enterprise some fifty-three Terran years later that resulted in the remaining colonies being saved, and efforts from the Vissian Union and Polity of Vulcan eventually cleaned up the planet.[5]

Terra Nova is an independent world in the Federation, with it's own colonies on a habitable moon of the system's dominant gas giant. It is also not a member of the Friends of Earth, causing some tension, but for a world of it's size, it has an outsized contribution to Starfleet, and contains the Five Moons Starship Yards.

As of 2353, the population is approximately 625 million, making it the third largest Human world.

Cascadia

Founded in 2120, this system later became a haven for most genetically modified humans, especially after the laws were tightened on them in various political administrations in United Earth from 2160 through 2220. While many would emigrate to colony worlds of their own, this system, which lies near the Celarian Reach region, contains a vast majority of most of what are generically considered the 'Cosmetics'.

The population of this planet in 2353 is 1.8 billion, with about 300 million being non humans.

Cascadia is known Federation wide for it's advancements in biotechnology, medicine, and peculiarly, wine, given the climate over the majority of the planet.[6] It is also considered, for good or for ill, the gateway to genetically modified space, and is located coreward of Earth.

Genetically Modified Humans

After the Augument war finished, with the Augment led governments losing after a nuclear exchange and the subsequent ending actions of World War Three, there were still many who had been modified, and assisted in the rebuilding of United Earth, before the prejudice against them began to become institutionalized. When the colony boom of Earth Starfleet occurred starting 2090, often, entire cities of genetically modified people left to form their own colonies, with Cascadia being the most prominent. While Earth disavowed these colonies, the formation of the United Federation of Planets in 2162 stopped what would have likely been a war or trade blockade, as they joined the Federation as their own planetary governments.[7]

In 2200, the majority of colonies formed "The Paracelsius Alliance", and began to push for what they termed "reasonable, small scale" editing being more permitted, but also abiding by the Federation Parliament directive permitting no more research into more genetic engineering by humanity, which is itself, a result of a condition of Earth letting the colonies loose of it's government in the original founding of the Federation.[8]

Largely, they lie closer to the galactic core than Earth in the Federation space. Most have a tense relation with United Earth, due to long memories of the Augment War, and the reaction to the occasional terrorist action from the Genetic Liberation Front, and United Earth's consistently suspicious attitude towards them as well as efforts to place itself at the leader of humanity in the Federation. While none of them are as augmented as the Augments, this often does not matter to the average politician or citizen of United Earth, with some scars still deliberately left present from World War Three.

However, with the Mars Independent Movement, and many worlds leaving the Friends of Earth as they near the threshold to be considered their own planet, this is now in flux.[9]

Nowadays, there are only a few broad categories of Genetically Modified humans:

Cosmetic Modifications
Comprising of 60% of genetically modified humanity, these are "optimized" genomes to produce specific appearances, or in some cases, add tails or animal like ears. Cascadia has many enclaves and cities full of them, resulting in what is considered one of the most visually diverse worlds in the region. There's also several notable exceptions, such as the dome-worlds of Scorpio Theta X and XI, well known for being the result of a wealthy Japanese Augment scientist wanting to produce what she called 'the ideal looking society in every form', and the warp-asteroid megastructure 'Violet Abyss', filled with people who look like dark skinned elves from fantasy, but are mostly biologically human.[10][sidenotes 3]
Minor/Major Genenetic Modification Strains
Comprising about 20-25% of genetically modified humanity, these are often descendants of Augment nationalities who were modified to provide specific tasks under Khan's Destiny Plan. All but three lines have exceptions in order to allow research into stabilizing the genome and remove some of the crippling defects that shorten their lifespan, and all but two lines live on Cascadia. [11] The exceptions are the so-called 'Farrington Gamma' and 'Salinh' lines, both of which are nomadic and are known for preferring solitude. Violently. [12]
Transhuman
Only technically human, these colony worlds form a coalition on the edge of Federation space, are known for only barely cooperating with the Federation laws. These colonies also research into cybernetics, and artificial intelligence. A famous Transhumanist colony world is Omicron Theta.[13], but the most advanced transhuman world is 'Da Vinci', located in the Telari Nebula, with 275 million inhabitants, with a focus on both cybernetic implants and biological engineering. Da Vinci, however, is not a member of the Federation, and has a strict neutrality agreement with all known powers.
The Genetic Liberation Front
Pro Augment Terrorism; rumoured to be led by an augment pulled out of Cryo Storage. Not much is currently known about this organization, but they have been behind several attacks on various colony worlds, Earth, and against Starfleet depos.[14]. This stands in contrast to the goals of Paracelsius Alliance, which seek to advance the availability of genetic therapies and cybernetic implants to fix medical conditions.
