Warp Scale (2349 re-calibration)
In 2340, with ships routinely reaching Warp Factor 10.5 (1157~ times the speed of light), and with the warp factor seeming arbitrary as some regions of space prohibited certain warp factors with the same engine speed, several experiments were performed. The result was the re-calibration of existing drives, as well as a way to tie the speed to field strength. This meant that while the calculation of actual warp factor was a bit different, the effective conversion of each warp factor was pinned, and reaching a particular speed meant breaching a different level of subspace. This had a peculiar beneficial side effect of resolving some peculiar anomalies in some areas, and fewer ships breaking up at high warp speeds. As of early 2349, it had been adopted Federation wide.
[Speed of Light (in multiples of c)] = WF ^ 3.45 [Speed of Light (light years/day)] = (WF ^ 3.45) / 365.25
One interesting consequence was that rating engines in cochranes would now give a rough idea of it's potential velocities rather than not being a good rule of thumb.
Council of the Heavens
The Federation legislature, established in 2210, is a tricameral legislature, and it's name largely a compromise between the existing members of the Council of Stars prior to disbanding.
- Council of the Wise (lowest house) - Seats are given to proportion of the Federation, with no respect to numbers by species. This house is most involved in Federation departments, bureaus and organizations that act for general populations. Considered, at least in the 24th century, a prerequisite for a run for the Council of the Galaxy. Terms last 5 years, and must be non consecutive.[council 1]
- Council of the Industrious (middle house) - Seats are given by number of political bodies in the federation, with multistellars often controlling blocs. Strictly involved in federal affairs and interFederation agencies. Terms last 5 years, and must be non consecutive.[council 1]
- Council of the Galaxy (upper house) - A Council of 151 seats, chosen by poll methods. By the 24th century, anyone running for this and winning without any previous Council experience was a rare breed. To be elected president, you must be serving or have served at least two terms in this Council. Terms last 4 years, and may be consecutive.[council 2]
